This course is an introduction to the art and science of ceramics. In this course, each
student will learn to create bowls, pinch pots, coils, draped forms, and have the
opportunity to make cups, spouts, and utensils. Students will work with colors and
glazes in addition to liquid slip and solid clay. Along the way, they will learn about the
material science of ceramics and glass. This course is intended for highly gifted
students in middle school and above.
Instructor: Karen Russell of SMILE Camp. Mrs. Russell is the co-founder and
director of SMILE Camp. She has taught gifted students for over 30 years. She has a
B.S in math education from Gardner-Webb University and an M. Ed. In Mathematics
and Education from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Prerequisites: Students should have stamina, fine motor skills, and interest to get their
hands dirty. While no age restriction is in place, instructor approval is required.
