About the event

This course is a serious introduction to robotics. In this course, each student will design

and build an autonomous robot that moves without bumping into obstacles as it

performs a function of the student’s choice. Students will design and build nearly all

elements of the robot including the sensor feedback systems, the form chassis, the

parts needs for motorized movement, and the algorithms needed to plan and achieve

the robot’s goal. Along the way, they will learn about microcontrollers and feedback

systems involving sensors and motion mechanisms; CAD layout and 3D printing;

planning algorithms and basic tool use.

This course is designed for highly gifted students with significant interest in problem

solving and broader interests in applications of electronics, machine learning and

mechanical systems. Students must have the maturity to work both independently and

in groups settings. Successful students will have significant mathematics and/or

computer science and/or engineering experience.

Note: Materials fee is to cover the cost of the microcontroller, 3d printer flux, and

handful of sensors. Students who wish to continue prototyping or choose more

sophisticated parts may incur additional charges.

Instructor: Roger Russell of SMILE Camp. and students from NC State University

will act as mentors for the students on this project. Mr. Russell is a director and co-

founder of SMILE camp. He has over 20 years of experience teaching and mentoring

students of all ages, including college students. He has a BS in mechanical

engineering from NC State University.

Prerequisites: The most successful students will have prior experience in computer

science, engineering, or mathematics as well as appropriate focus and attention to

detail. While no age restriction is in place, instructor approval is required.

This event has a group. You’re welcome to join the group once you register for the event.
